American Parents’ Perceptions of Child Explicit Image Sharing

Parents and other adult caregivers of biologically or sociolegally related children (hereafter, “parents”) can play an important role in the online behavior their care. In this study, we examined parental correlates three outcomes— talking to child about image sharing (66% yes); expecting had shared sexually explicit images (39% preparedness if child’s were leaked (38% yes)—in a survey nationally representative sample 402 parents United States. Regression analyses revealed that one’s was significantly associated with parent being mother, having high school, enforcing higher number technology rules, knowing secondary social media accounts, friends share themselves. Expecting sent predicted by fewer rules place for child, more permissive attitudes resharing images, expectation schoolmates images. Unexpectedly, perceived less—rather than more—parental comfort activities.
